How August 2022 Elections in Kenya will Impact Real Estate Market in Homabay County.
Homabay has 476,875 registered voters as we head towards the much-anticipated polls. Considered Raila Odinga’s stronghold, we want to look at how the polls will affect the real estate market in the county.
Facts about Homabay
Homa Bay County is located in the southern part of Nyanza, along the shoreline of Lake Victoria. The county covers an area of 3,183.3 square kilometers and has a population of about 1.3 million people. It borders five other counties: Migori to the south, Kisii and Nyamira to the east, and Kericho and Kisumu to the northeast. The county is accessible by lake transport, road, and air. It has a rich history with folklore which makes it popular for cultural tourism. It was originally known as Chich Onuno (Onuno’s market) but it was renamed Homa Bay by colonialists because it overlooks Huma Hills in Karachuonyo.

The County has improved its road network by constructing new roads and maintaining existing ones. It recently launched a 7-million for roads program to ensure that each ward identifies roads to be developed or maintained. Road and transport connectivity has been enhanced in many wards, and solar lights have been installed in many trading centers and informal settlements to increase security and business hours. Road safety has also been improved through regular training and advocacy measures.
Raila Odinga, the Azimio presidential candidate, has vowed to award a charter to Tom Mboya University College in Homa Bay if he wins the presidency in next month’s polls. The charter will allow the university to operate autonomously and expand its academic programs. He also promised to establish one factory per county to create job opportunities for students who graduate from institutions of higher learning. This will encourage infrastructural development which will in turn spur the real estate market in Homabay.
At the gubernatorial level, there is a hot contest between Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and current Women Representative Gladys Wanga. Evans Kidero has promised to improve the health sector and ensure the improvement of roads as most roads in the rural areas are impassable. Residents living in Homa Bay, Mbita, Sindo, and Kendu Bay suffer a persistent shortage of clean water despite being situated at the shore of Lake Victoria, an issue he has promised to address if elected governor. On the other hand, Gladys Wanga has promised to transform health, roads, education, and water services that are way behind in the county. As August polls near, we will see how things unfold for this great county with great potential that is yet to be untapped.

The Sh2.9 billion flagship Programme by President Uhuru Kenyatta will oversee the construction of the first tarmac road in the area covering 74 kilometers from Mbita, Sindo, and Kiabuya all the way to Sori region.
